01.05.2018 San Diego Mayor Loves Iron Butterfly!

As the head of America’s Finest City, San Diego Mayor Jerry Sanders is often caught between a rock and a hard place as his ambitious visions for the future meet daunting political and budgetary realities. But come next Sunday, Sanders will be in a uniquely hard-rock place — by choice — when he presents the legendary band Iron Butterfly with a Lifetime Achievement Award at the 20th annual San Diego Music Awards.

“I still listen to Iron Butterfly. I have a pair of drumsticks the band autographed for me and an autographed copy of ‘In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida,’ ” said Sanders, 60, who recalls exactly when he first heard the 1968 album many credit with launching hard rock. LINK

11.02.2015 Iron Butterfly on Tour!

Best known for their classic “In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida,” Iron Butterfly burst onto Southern California music scene in the late 1960s. While on the road with the likes of The Doors, Airplane, Dead, Traffic, The Who and Cream, Iron Butterfly’s debut ‘Heavy’ stayed on Billboard’s album charts for almost a year.

They followed up with the monumental quadruple platinum “In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida” whose title track clocks in at 17:05, an entire album side, shaking up the music industry – plus it stayed on the charts for almost three years, with 81 weeks in the Top Ten. “In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida” sold more albums than any artist in the history of the music industry, and the Platinum Award was invented for Iron Butterfly. They also hit gold with their third album ‘Ball.’

10.07.2015 Iron Butterfly talks Lobster Festival and 50 Years of Music

“Whether you call them one of the first heavy metal bands ever or know them as one of the biggest rock groups of all time, there’s no way to deny that Iron Butterfly helped define the music of the 60’s and 70’s while laying the tracks for the sounds of today. Their driving rhythms and dirty guitar sound broke all music sales benchmarks ever when they first hit the scene getting them a wall of Multi-Platinum, Platinum, Gold, and Silver albums. All that is to say, that when they take the Lobster Festival Stage, Friday September 25 – the beach is gonna rock.”

07.08.2015 Rockcellar Magazine names ‘Vida the Number One All-Time Long Song

In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida is a 17-minute jam extravaganza, the title song of Iron Butterfly’s 1968 LP that takes up the entire second side. “It actually started as a country ballad and was originally only one minute and 20 seconds long,” drummer Ron Bushy told Drumhead magazine. “Then we went on tour all over the U.S. with the Airplane for three months, and we fine-tuned it. We played that song in concert every night during that tour with a drum solo in it.”
